I have been participating in the #oneword movement for the past three years. Focusing solely on one major theme has helped me to eliminate the clutter of new years resolutions, eliminate the stress of trying to redefine myself (New Year - New You!), and allows me to distill my my intentions into one category. It has done me well.
In 2016 my word was BOLD, and I was. I was bold enough to leave my job at a school setting that was not right for me, and bold enough to ask for a transfer into a school that I love so much and is so professionally satisfying to me that it nullifies the commute. I was bold in my opinions, goals, outfits, and even lipstick choices. Yes, if there was a bold move to make, I made it. I think that by choosing the word BOLD, I was giving myself permission to be my bold self.
In 2017 my word was LEAP, and I leaped into all sorts of things. I became a school board trustee for my local school district. I ran for and won a position on the board of directors for the California Science Teachers Association. I am in a group of like-minded individuals in my community that is starting an educational foundation. I am presenting new materials at new conferences. I developed and presented professional development series for my own school district for NGSS shifts in instruction. I became a teacher leader through the Exploratorium. I took chances, I took advantage of opportunities, I became involved in a way that I have always wanted to.
However, in all of my activities, in all of my commitments, I think I need to do more. I have many ideas of what I want to accomplish, now I need to DO them.
- I like to run. My commute and time commitments have made it easy for me to make excuses for why I don't run. I need to just suit up and get some miles on these legs.
- I want to blog. I write blog posts in my head during my commute, but I never actually take the time to actually "do" the writing, or posting.
- I want to "do" more in my role as the middle school/junior high director for CSTA. I want to start a column for California Classroom, and hold some local CSTA events.
- I want to spend more quality time with my son and husband, more adventures, more travel.
It's time for me to deliver; it's time for me to DO.
